Traffic
School and Defensive Driving School
Getting a ticket (moving violation) and having it
appear on your driving record will cause your insurance
rates to increase for
three years from the conviction
date.
Always go to traffic school or defensive driving school
when it is an option for your violation in your state.
Unless you choose to dispute the ticket in court,
you are going to pay the fine anyway. Why not spend
an additional twenty dollars or so to keep your auto
insurance rates from going up ten to twenty percent
for three years.
For
example, if you are paying five hundred dollars every
six months for your auto policy, and you have a one-point
violation go on your driving record, depending on
your carrier, your premium could increase by ten to
twenty percent. That could be between fifty and one
hundred dollars every six months. If you multiply
that increase by six (three years of six month renewals)
you are looking at three hundred to six hundred dollars
in additional premium.
Make sure that you receive a copy of the traffic school
certificate for your records and keep it for three
years. It should contain the citation number on it
and is the only proof that you completed the traffic
school. If your driving records are not updated correctly,
you can show the certificate as proof of completion
of traffic school.
